How happy is your sandpit?
Serial entrepreneur, Colin J Browne, created the “Happy Sandpit” analogy for organisational culture after finally having enough of hiring the wrong people when one particular mess of an employee joined his team a few years back. Frustration led him on a long journey of observation and research, resulting in the book “How to Build a Happy Sandpit”. The basis for Browne’s book, and the resultant talks and corporate workshops, came from insights, stories and lessons from interviews with more than 60 of South Africa’s top business leaders on how to create and maintain a brilliant organisational culture.
Browne explains, “I show early-stage entrepreneurs how to fall back in love with the businesses they started and teach would-be entrepreneurs the fundamental steps to building strong foundations through the understanding and development of organisational culture”. The lessons are based on his own experience as a successful entrepreneur (co-founder of SALESGURU in South Africa), as a business journalist in the UK, UAE and South Africa, and on years of front-line research to help entrepreneurs to avoid the invisible pitfalls of organisation building.
“My goal is to enable them to hire more intelligently and to build environments where people feel more fully engaged,” says Browne. “By embracing the central tenets of strong organisational culture – however distinct the flavour may be – the major hurdle to building a strong company can be overcome”. Browne thrives on helping business leaders see their organisations from an entirely new angle and understanding that the key to sustainable growth is a supportive culture grown from the heart of the organisation.
Browne will be sharing his expertise on stage at the South African Success Summit alongside a fantastic line-up of international speakers, including Steve “The Woz” Wozniak, Jordan Belfort “The Wolf of Wall Street” and our own South African sporting legend, Francois Pienaar, among others.
After a very successful career at the top end of international rugby, Pienaar has gone on to apply the lessons he learned in leadership on the field, to business and the boardroom. Acknowledged by arguably the greatest leader of our time, Nelson Mandela said: “it was under his inspiring leadership that rugby became the pride of the entire county, his leadership extended beyond the field of rugby and he truly represents all South Africans. Under his inspiring leadership a nation was brought together.”
A highly regarded and well received speaker, outside of his business interests and charity work, Pienaar travels extensively delivering inspirational motivation talks on applying the principals of team work and leadership to all areas of life. He brings to the South African Success Summit a different perspective on the meaning of success and achieving your goals.
The South African Success Summit is taking place at Sandton Convention Centre on 1st and 2nd March 2014. The 2-day high energy event is a balanced mix of local and international expertise focusing on success strategy insights and the skills needed to create a wealthier and healthier mindset along five broad themes, namely: business leadership, entrepreneurship, wealth creation, negotiating and public speaking skills, and personal development.
