Q & A With The Muffinz And Muzart Ahead Of The Upcoming DStv Delicious Festival

So we had a sedentary interview with The Muffinz and Muzart at Total Exposure offices out in Milpark and we left the building with sore stomach from laughing a lot, it sure is safe to say if the TheMuffinz and Muzart didn’t make it as musicians, they sure would have made it as comedians. Here is what they had to say:

On a scale of 1-10 how excited are you guys about the upcoming DStv Delicious Festival?

The Muffinz: On a scale of 1-10, probably, 12…we haven’t played a big festival in Joburg, no we have a big festival, no actually we haven’t, anyway big is relative, but we haven’t played a festival like this in Joburg, and how cool is it that we are playing at a festival called Delicious and we are called The Muffinz?
Muzart: We are very excited man, we grew up listening to Chaka Khan and Louie Vega is one of our musical idols, if you listen to our music you can hear that we have been influenced by guys like Louie Vega…NOW to be sharing a stage of him is mind blowing.

What is the relationship between food and music in your opinion?

The Muffinz: There is a lot similarities in how you prepare a meal and how you put together a band, see you if have an onion here and a tomato there, they don’t mean anything, but if you put them together you can create something, like music, a note is just a note, but if you have a guitar and you add drums then you have something, all the ingredients together is what’s beautiful.
Muzart: For us music is food for the soul and food is music for the body, if you listen to bad music it might depress you and disturb you soul right? The same if you eat bad food, your body won’t be healthy, so need good food and you need good music, and also food is art man…the way chefs prepare a meal, that’s art.

For people that might not know, how did you guys get together as a band?

The Muffinz: In 2010 when Mthae, Simz and Atomza met while singing in the UJ (University Of Johannesburg) Choir. The three of them decided to gather their guitars and form a band. We entered a competition at Cool Runnings in Melville and their performance was so good, that we brought one of the judges to tears. His name was Philip Howard and he was a journalist from Benoni. He wrote such an amazing story about us that it was the big turning point for us. We realised that we could do this. We went onto win the competition.

Muzart: Tshegofatso “Tazzy” Lehutso and Victory “Vic” Chauke met at a gig in Soweto. Sensing a musical synergy, the two trained musicians quickly sparked a friendship and the pair began jamming in the studio. Their dream of starting a musical production team led them to approach, Rorisang “Rori” Thandekiso to be their ambassador. Rori was already successful in the television industry at the time and hadn’t considered pursuing a musical path. The pair took a chance and sent her a Facebook message, to their surprise, she responded and agreed to meet them to listen to their music. However, another surprise awaited them. When Rori stepped behind the mic, a spectacular voice was unleashed, one that would surely elevate their musical dreams into a sparkly reality.

So a lot of bands come together and make magic, achieve success and fame and then egos get in the way, and then they break up. Do you guys have a plan to avoid that?

The Muffinz: The way we deal with that is, there is teaching in this group that we live by, one of the of those teachings is, don’t ever be attached to anything, don’t be attached to your ego or your opinions, we also believe that there is bigger purpose that we are here to serve, something bigger than just fame.

Muzart: You know there is five different personalities in this band, so of course we disagree but we don’t allow those disagreements to deteriorate into something venomous, if anyone two people amongst argue we don’t let it escalate, we wait for everyone to calm down and then talk it out, but most of it has to do with how we were raised.

How are guys prepping for the DStv Delicious Festival and what can we expect?

The Muffinz: Pretty much like any other gig, oh wait… we just might throw some muffins from the stage.

Muzart: We’ll just say, go get yourself some tickets, we are going to make it a good show.
