PROJECTS AT TAF15

EMERGING ARTIST EXHIBITION– FRESH PRODUCE BROUGHT TO YOU
BY RAND MERCHANT BANK

Turbine Art Fair together with VANSA host Fresh Produce 2015. Curator Zanele Mashumi has selected work by young artists from around South Africa, to be exhibited as part of the Fresh Produce Exhibition at the Turbine Art Fair. Young artists selected will also participate in professional education and mentoring facilitated by Assemblage.

“The Fresh Produce exhibition is focused on giving emerging artists the opportunity to exhibit amongst established artists, galleries and art platforms.
These artists were chosen based on the presentation of work, quality and their professionalism. The important thing was to take these artists and be able to broaden their network through giving them the opportunity at TAF.
This project has been a wonderful experience. Travelling across the country and seeing what this country has to offer and has changed my view in a very positive way. It has exposed me to understanding what’s lacking for artists in the other provinces” says Zanele Mashumi, Curator of Fresh Produce.

This Residency is awarded annually to an emerging artist living in South Africa as part of Turbine Art Fair and the Sylt Foundation’s Residency Programme. The first winner in 2014 was artist Setlamorago Mashilo from Pretoria.
All the applications received were of a very high standard and were extremely strong contenders for this Award, making the judging panel’s task a difficult one. The five judges consisted of gallerist and art expert Warren Siebrits, artists Usha Seejarim and Andrew Tshabangu, the first TASA winner Stelamorago Mashilo and Glynis Hyslop, Managing Director, The Forum Company, organisers and sponsors of Turbine Art Fair.
The TASA prize will be officially presented during the Turbine Art Fair.

Managing Director, The Forum Company, organisers and sponsors of Turbine Art Fair.
Sarah Biggs´ TASA Award includes a 2-months residency on the Island of Sylt including a return airfare to Germany, a subsidised apartment with a generous allowance to cover her two month stay. The apartment is fully furnished and situated on the Foundation’s grounds. Her new work will also be shown at TAF 2016.
“The TASA award has found its place within the landscape of the South African contemporary arts. I am really excited that this year’s winner Sarah Biggs will have the chance to engage with the delicate nature of the island through her art and am sure she will profit from the time on Sylt”, says Indra Wussow.
PERFORMANCE ARTIST – Antha Moys The Portrait Exchange

Fuelled by the desire to play with people from all walks of life and inspired by the belief that everyone can draw, Anthea Moys will perform “The Portrait Exchange”. The work is inspired by ideas of exchange, structured interactions, and games. The performance is a portrait exchange between the artist and any willing participant who will sit across from her for a period of time, follow the rules (or break them) and play. After the interaction each will leave with a portrait of the other. It is hoped that the artist’s collection of portraits of herself, drawn by the audience, will grow over time.

The Rules of the Game:
In one minute we both draw each other, but we cannot look at the page whilst we are drawing. After the game we sign, date and exchange drawings: you give me yours and I give you mine.
