TUMI MOLEKANE IN DEFENCE OF MY ART MUSIC VIDEO

The RETURN OF THE KING, Tumi Molekane debuted his latest single “In Defence
Of My Art” on Tuesday, 21 October 2014 on 5FM’s Fresh breakfast show,
featuring South African artists, Ziyon & Reason – A game changer for the
South African music scene.

Just under 2 weeks later we saw the single come to life in a one of a kind
music video that debuted on MTV Base “Spanking New” on Friday, 31 October
2014 at 4pm.

The video was shot in Cape-Town, South Africa and the theme came from video
director Kyle Lewis who is known for directing work with striking visuals,
as he has an affinity for music videos with a bold aesthetic, and felt a
greyscale lush to the video would soften the harshness of the images people
would be confronted with.

Together Tumi and Kyle set out to make a music video that was as striking
and jarring as the song. The effort, time, skills, creativity and energy
comes oozing out of the video making specific statements about gun violence,
power, African misrepresentation, gender inequality and style.

“There were parts of this video that were incredibly difficult to shoot and
partake in but I trusted Kyle with this vision. I grew up in a household ran
by a woman with a gun. I slept in a bed with an AK47 under the bed, that’s
not some kind of cool fantasy for me. That’s what made a lot of us in South
Africa.” Says Tumi.

The “In Defence OF My Art” music video sets a new standard in the South
African entertainment industry, and is something all South Africans can be
proud of.
