Q&A with Nicholas Murphy Aka Chet Faker
Chet Faker (born Nicholas James Murphy) is an Australian electronica/soul/lounge well I’m sorta finding it difficult to define a genre for him so in simple terms Chet is a great musician. I won’t bore you with all the stuff one can Google or look up on Wikipedia. So let’s dive right into the interview yes!!!
Bongani: This is what might be the most important question who is Nick and who is Chet Faker ?
Chet Faker: *Chuckles* I don’t know well Nick is a really a chilled guy who likes reading and chilling Nick is Chet Faker the guy who loves making music and relaxing.
Bongani: This is a question from a fan (@Cabanga_) “why & how you came about choosing the name “Chet Faker” as opposed to your real name.”
Chet Faker: Nick Murphy my birth name is already being used by a guy by the name of Nick Murphy here in Australia and he already has 2 albums out, sometimes when I played under the name people would show up to my shows assuming it was the other Nick Murphy so I didn’t want to step on any toes and at the time i didn’t think this project would be so big and well Chet Faker is inspired from Chet Baker who was a jazz artist I loved most of all I was a big fan of … the way he sang.
Bongani: What is your favorite instrument and why?
Chet Faker: Uhm I’d have to say the Piano as to why the Piano i feel it’s one of the richest sounding instruments and well i love harmony and the Piano just kills me.
Bongani: What’s on your playlist on a daily basis?
Chet Faker: I listen to a lot of African music actually, like Abdullah Ibrahim, I’m also listening to Penguin Cafe Orchestra, Pat Metheny, I go through so many phases and right now I’m at a phase where I am into Instrumental music as in no vocals just instruments so yeah that’s what i’m listening to.
Bongani:What’s a day like in the life of Chet Faker/Nick Murphy?
Chet Faker: When I’m off tour I like to chill relax , take a walk go for a jog in the morning, rock some trails at the river bank of the Yarra River and well hit the studio.
Bongani: How may hours do you reckon you spend in the studio?
Chet Faker: lately 4 hours at least a day because I’m trying to relax I just finished my Album so I need the rest I’d spend over 8 hours during the course of making the album.
Bongani: Are we to expect a release date for the album any time soon? and what is the title?
Chet Faker: Yeah soon very soon and the title of the Album is “Built On Glass”.
Bongani: Are we expecting any singles of the album any time soon?
Chet Faker: *laughs* yeah soon in the coming weeks *laughs again* I don’t know how much I’m allowed to say so yeah that’s it on the subject.
