Sprite reveals SA’s next uncontainable hip hop stars

On 02 August 2014, Zone 6 in Soweto played host to a celebration of hip hop culture: the Sprite Uncontainable finale. With C-Live as MC, the event was jam-packed with everything hip hop – from live performances by emcees and dance crews to the insane NBA Memphis Grizzlies Dunk Squad, pro skateboarders and, most importantly, the contestants bringing their A-game as they battled it out.

The stage was on fire with headline international acts Pharoahe Monch and Jean Grae, local hip hop stars Revivolution, Reason, Tumi and Maggz as well as jaw-dropping performances by dance crews Artistic Intelligence and Demolition Squad. The real stars for the night were the emcee, dance and graff finalists who went through fierce competition rounds, giving their all to be named winner.

DJ’s Vigilante, Vardz, P-Kuttah, Zakes and Mr X kept the beats banging while the graffiti finalists created masterpieces for the judges, B’ballers completed a high-pressure NBA Skills challenge, and SO much more.

The NBA played a big part in the event, with the Memphis Grizzlies Dunk Squad, dancers and mascot attracting a huge crowd, along with Houston Rockets player Terrence Jones.

Competition judges Reason, Mernoly Simba and Mars were joined by Pharoahe Monch, and the public, to select the top contestants in each category – emcee, dance, graffiti, basketball as well as fan.

Fan finalists, selected from submissions of a piece of their work such as a picture or a poem, were paired up with emcee, dance and graffiti finalists who used their fans submission as inspiration for their performance at the event. The fan finalists also played their part, promoting their finalist on social media leading up to the event.

“Sprite is committed to providing a platform and audience for youth to unleash their talent and express their true selves. The brand has been instrumental in the development of hip hop in the country and the fusion of the different hip hop elements that are a celebration of the lifestyle,” adds Hlukani Rikhotso, Snr. Brand Manager for Sprite.

The overall winners who walked away with the ultimate prize of a trip to New York in February 2015 – where they will enjoy a truly uncontainable experience courtesy of Sprite – are:

Emcee winner: Luthando Dekeni aka Lolli “skoko sase nyanga”, a kwaito-inspired emcee from Nyanga East in Cape Town, now living in Pretoria.

Dance winner: Benny Chiloane, an enthusiastic, versatile and energetic dancer from Nelspruit.

Graffiti winner: Charles Keylock aka “Riot”, a passionate graffiti artist from Randburg, Johannesburg.

B-ball winner: Andile Zulu, a lightning-fast basketballer from Katlehong.

Fan winner: Shavon Etches, a BA law student at Wits University in Johannesburg.

The Sprite Uncontainable finale was brought to you by Sprite, in association with the NBA, ShockRA Entertainment and W.A.R Media. For more information about Sprite Uncontainable visit www.spritehiphop.co.za.

‘the dirt road’

Fresh from its successful debut in Paris, France ‘the dirt road’ makes it’s African debut at the 2014 National Arts’ Festival in Grahamstown, brought to you by Slice Bean Machine in association with Soweto Magazine.

This original South African stage play is written by up-and-coming theatre maker, actress and writer Kim Sanssoucie and fiercely directed by acclaimed theatre director Alby Michaels with original score by Zethu Mashika. The 2-hander has Sanssoucie as Kate Ndlela, a gentle school teacher and her husband, a prolific artist; Simphiwe Ndlela is superbly played by Naledi winning actor Nat Ramabulana.

Set in contemporary Johannesburg, this quirky but inherently tragic love story follows the relationship between a Xhosa man and an English-speaking Coloured woman. Their youthful romantic love is challenged by cultural disparity and common marital trials. An external incident causes them to harshly re-examine their own truths and expectations. ‘the dirt road’ is an honest portrayal of a tumultuous relationship enveloped by an authentic adoration between two lovers.

‘the dirt road’ was part of French Seasons 2013; produced by live performance production company Slice Bean Machine in association with the National Arts Council of South Africa.  It showcased at the American University of Paris as well as the Lavoir Moderne Parisien Theatre to wonderful reviews.

Andrew Davidson, Head of Comparative Literature at the American University of Paris and a New York Best Selling Author and Critic said of watching ‘the dirt road’.

“The audience felt as if they were intruding upon a real couple in the most private moments of their relationship. The feeling of honesty was so intense that at times it felt uncomfortable, in the best possible way”

“Fearless performances by both actors”

 – Andrew Davidson

‘the dirt road’ unapologetically comments on social issues that fall part of our current discourse in contemporary South Africa. It questions the relationship between our instilled traditions and our modern socio-economic environment with a post-apartheid backdrop. These themes are tackled through the relationship of an inter-cultural married couple. The play does not follow a linear timeline and has unconventional and stylized direction and lighting design which makes it a new, fresh piece of art from a proudly South African troupe.

Truly an original and contemporary slice of South African theatre not to be missed!

THE WEEKND PARTNERS WITH GOPRO FOR O2 ARENA CONCERT FILM PREMIERING ON GOPRO.COM

Following a long tradition of shattering the mold and circumventing convention, platinum-selling alternative R&B futurist THE WEEKND enlisted GoPro to exclusively film his recent sold out performance at the O2 Arena in London using their new HERO3+ Black Edition camera. The show happened during the artist and producer’s critically lauded “The Fall” European tour in support of his 2013 chart-topping sophomore opus, Kiss Land.

GoPro brings viewers up-close-and-personal during the show, capturing the most rousing and frenetic moments intimately. The video clip places audiences on stage with THE WEEKND as he ignites fan favorites like “The Town,” and “Belong to the World.” As the packed venue watches intently, the GoPro team utilizes the lightweight and super high-definition HERO3+ Black Edition camera to capture a concert experience that’s never been caught before. It’s stirring, sexy, and soaring. It’s Kiss Land at its purest.

Last year, Kiss Land [XO/Republic Records] landed at #2 on the Billboard Top 200, while seizing the #1 spot on the iTunes Top Albums Chart. He followed up the album with the sold out international jaunt, “The Fall Tour”. Right now, The Weeknd is in the process of readying new music for the world to hear.

We’re excited to debut HERO3+ Black Edition/Music, a musician-focused version of our best selling HERO3+ Black Edition camera, including everything needed to capture professional quality photos and video of any music moment, from practice to performance. These mounts made for music makes it easy for musicians and DJs to mount the camera to instruments, turntables, mic stands and other stage equipment to capture immersive GoPro-style footage and unique points of view. Artists can also use the GoPro App on a mobile device to control the camera if it’s mounted out of reach, while GoPro’s free editing software, GoPro Studio, makes it easy to edit professional looking videos for self-promotion across social media channels.

Are you the next big thing in design?

If your answer to the above question is yes, then Enter Samsung’s Inspire Design talent search competition before 30 April 2014.

Samsung Electronics South Africa is calling on all aspiring designers to enter its Inspire Design talent search competition, before 30 April 2014. This initiative is aimed at unearthing SA’s top talent and will be rewarding them with extensive media exposure and perhaps that big break!

What is Inspire Design?

Samsung believes that technology can only have meaning when it is placed it in the hands of a person and, through this initiative aim to accelerate the discovery of new talent. Samsung has partnered with some of the country’s most celebrated influencers across four categories including jewellery, fashion, furniture as well as homeware and décor as part of the programme. What makes this competition different is that there will be eight winners – two from each category who will have the opportunity of a lifetime
elevate their profiles and showcase their work to the community.

How to enter:

It is so easy – designers should visit www.samsung.com/za/inspire_design/ and complete their contact details. Candidates will then receive an entry form and guidelines on how to submit their work. A short overview of the concept as well as sketches or photos of the item needs to be uploaded. The deadline for entries is 30 April 2014.

The judging process:

Four judges have been selected to search for and, ultimately, choose South Africa’s best emerging design talent. The judges include successful jewellery designer Kirsten Goss; premium homeware and décor artist, Susan Slee of Maneki; internationally celebrated fashion designer, Shaldon Kopman of Naked Ape; and CEO of premium furniture store Bakos Brothers, Ryan Bakos. Winners will be announced by end of May 2014.

Michelle Potgieter, Director of Corporate Marketing and Communications at Samsung Electronics SA, says, “Globally, Samsung is associated with similar programmes in various creative categories from music to film that are aimed at unleashing the potential of individuals. We are proud to be driving the Inspire Design initiative locally to find extraordinary people and showcase our next generation of upcoming artists.”

Samsung Electronics has partnered with DEKAT magazine to ensure that the eight deserving winners will have the opportunity to promote their work to a wider audience, which will provide extensive exposure for them to take their careers to the next level.

Elzilda Becker, publisher of DEKAT magazine is delighted to show its support for the Samsung Inspire Design competition. “DEKAT itself is synonymous with ground-breaking ideas and quality material, and we look forward to seeing what the young designers of our country will deliver across the four categories.”

Increasingly form, factor, innovation and technology are going hand-in-hand, and this competition is being used as a platform to create possibilities for all aspiring artists.

“This competition is for anyone with design talent who is ready to be noticed and has the desire to succeed. By offering this platform, Samsung is able to create opportunities for exposure which could just be the help that these undiscovered designers need to turn their dreams into a reality,” concludes Potgieter.

Meet the Inspire Design Judges:

Kirsten Goss – Jewellery design

A style icon in her own right, Kirsten cites her Scandinavian heritage and South African roots as important influences. It is her rare talent for tapping into contemporary lifestyle trends that has seen Kirsten Goss jewellery becoming one of this country’s most talked about designer brands. Kirsten’s flagship boutique is nestled in leafy Kensington, while design and production are headquartered in a state-of-the-art design studio in Durban. A truly global business, with African roots servicing an international clientèle.

Shaldon Kopman – Fashion design:

Shaldon Kopman is a well-recognised name in the fashion Industry. His career to date has spanned the globe. He is director and founder of the bespoke men’s brand Naked Ape. Shaldon’s comprehensive knowledge of the fashion industry as a whole is complementary to his creativity and uses this experience to conceptualise in a refreshing and artistic way. He has a special talent for interpreting trends and his passion for Africa is manifested in his designs.

Susan Slee – Homeware and Décor design:

Susan Slee is the owner of Maneki van Staal, a well-known jewellery designer and manufacturer. Her fascination with the simplicity of instant drawings led to the birth of Maneki van Staal, an instant success with an engaging story behind each product and character. In the last five years, Maneki have opened three outlets in South Africa. Currently the Maneki product range includes sugar spoons, teaspoon sets, salad and cutlery sets, ceramic tableware, leather handbags and jewellery.

Ryan Bakos – Furniture Industry Leader:

Ryan Bakos was born into the Bakos family business and took over the reins in 2008. The first step in this process was the recent opening of a 4500m2 factory in Wynberg, a brave move that has enabled Bakos Brothers to compete on a larger scale, as well as cut out the middlemen. The factory buys fabrics and leather in bulk, direct from the wholesalers, which has dramatically reduced costs, resulting in reduced prices on its sofas especially. Ryan has also introduced a new, cutting edge internal information system, which disseminates information and enables interaction between employees, creating a sense of family for the 100 staff located around the country.

ALIGNMENT A Solo Exhibition By Artist Chad Muska

Artist Chad Muska opens up his private studio in Los Angeles to the public for the

first time with a ONE NIGHT ONLY solo art show, with work

spanning textural painting, sculpture, and more.
On Friday April 25th, pro-skateboarder and artist Chad Muska (@themuska) will open up his private studio space to the public for the first time, with a solo art exhibition titled Alignment. Muska has been working out of Werkärtz Studio for the past year, building and experimenting in unconventional art materials and applying them to both hanging wall pieces, and sculptures. Muska has decided to open up his personal studio he transformed into a gallery atmosphere and invite the public in to see the large level art installation he has created. While the opening is one night only, Friday, April 25th, studio visits by appointment are encouraged throughout the week of April 21st, leading up to the show.

Muska’s artwork uses his immediate surroundings, available materials and the relationship between man and nature as inspiration and mediums of his new work. He is fearless and intuitive in his use of materials now being drawn to industrial elements like concrete, resin, and steel, all materials he has a strong connection with because of his long career in skateboarding and past artwork he has produced. “Without these mediums, my career in skateboarding would not be possible and there would be no walls to create public displays of art on. I have tried my best to create a new identity in my art separate from the public persona of a professional skateboarder that I’ve had for all these years, but that DNA is embedded in me, and remains prevalent in my artwork.” says Muska about his work.

Although at first glance Muska’s most current body of work looks nothing like the street art or the graffiti he has become widely recognized for doing, the details in the artwork show those direct connections. There has been a long progression of repetition in Muska’s previous work, that lead to the destruction of the obvious imagery he had been using and brought him to the patterns and textures that are dominant in his current artwork. Muska feels a strong connection to the anti-imagery pieces he is creating, as they are a more open to interpretation to the viewer, and offer boundless longevity.

Muska has exhibited in numerous group shows and his most recent solo show Transitions exhibited at New Image Art gallery in June 2013. This exhibition picks up where Transitions left off by exploring “the continuous use of concrete by blending together both elements of nature and synthetic materials into abstract patterns and bold structures.”

National Theatre Live continues to build on its highly successful range of screenings in South Africa with the release of the National Theatre’s multi-award-winning production of War Horse, seen by over five million people worldwide since its premiere at the National in 2007. War Horse will be broadcast for the first time from its home at the New London Theatre in the West End to Cinema Nouveau’s digital screens nationwide and at Ster-Kinekor Blue Route in Tokai, Cape Town, from Saturday, 12 April for eight shows only.

Based on the novel by Michael Morpurgo, the story has been adapted for the stage by Nick Stafford in association with the South African-based, award-winning Handspring Puppet Company. Since its first performance, War Horse has become an international smash hit.

War Horse follows the powerful story of a young boy called Albert and his beloved horse, Joey, who has been requisitioned to fight for the British in World War I. Caught in enemy crossfire, Joey ends up serving on both sides during the war before landing in No Man’s Land, while Albert, not old enough to enlist, embarks on a treacherous mission to find his horse and bring him home.

A remarkable tale of courage, loyalty and friendship, War Horse features at its heart astonishing life-size puppets by South Africa’s ground-breaking Handspring Puppet Company, which bring breathing, galloping horses to thrilling life on stage.

The National Theatre Live screening of War Horse will also mark the first theatre production to be broadcast in South Africa in Sony 4K, following the recent digital technology projection upgrade at all the Cinema Nouveau and Ster-Kinekor sites.

War Horse is adapted by Nick Stafford and presented in association with Handspring Puppet Company. Directed by Marianne Elliott and Tom Morris, it is designed by Rae Smith, with lighting by Paule Constable and movement and horse choreography by Toby Sedgwick. Now in its fourth year, Red Bull Beat Battle has grown immensely since its first edition in 2011 and now sports some famous alumni who have gone on to do great things in the South African dance world. Back in 2014 to find the top seven dance crews to go up against last year’s champions, this year the qualifiers head to 5 cities to find Mzansi’s best.

As a platform for urban dance styles like Pantsula, iSbhujwa, Krump, Hip Hop, and Breaking, the event has unearthed some amazing talent. Choreographer and Red Bull Beat Battle head-judge Somizi Mhlongo has had the opportunity to see that firsthand.

“Red Bull Beat Battle has been instrumental in the development of dance in the country and unearthing quality talent. I’ve worked with many of the dance crews involved since they competed in the finals in all three previous editions.

The platform and the springboard it offers dance crews has opened many doors for crews who have placed within the top 8 in the past, allowing dancers to sustain themselves using dance as a profession.

“I’m really looking forward to seeing what crews have to offer in 2014 – I.D.A. proved that not only Hip Hop can wow the crowds. I’m really hoping that a female dance crews will come out hard this year and be the first female group to snatch the title.”

The qualifying tour heads to Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, Durban before heading to Pretoria and Johannesburg.
As with previous years, the seven crews will be selected once all of the qualifiers are complete. Historically Johannesburg has housed the biggest qualifiers with 99 crews having auditioned over the two-day qualifier in 2013.

Qualifier venues and dates are as follows:
• Port Elizabeth – 1 March 2014, St. Thomas Auditorium. Gelvandale
• Durban – 8 March 2014, BAT Centre Trust, Durban
• Cape Town – 15 March 2014, Joseph Stone Auditorium, Athlone
• Pretoria – 22 March 2014 Little Theatre, Pretoria
• Johannesburg – 29 & 30 March, The Alexander Theatre, Braamfontein

The selected crews will then have to prepare to duel I.D.A, who were the first ever iSbhujwa crew to make it to the final and claim the title. They’ll go on to compete in the Red Bull Beat Battle final, crew versus crew, until there is only one crew who is victorious. The final will take place in Johannesburg on 31 May 2014.

Powered up crews with the right moves who think they have a chance of taking Red Bull Beat Battle can register at www.redbullbeatbattle.co.za.

Game on!
