Q&A with Yo Grapes
So as we all know this weekend is the Cool Inc Tattoo Expo and we had a few questions for Yo Grapes ahead of his set this weekend this is how it went.
BOS: First and foremost who is Yo Grapes and why YO Grapes?
YG: Yo Grapes is guitar-pop that (hopefully) can make people smile and have a tune stuck in their heads.
BOS: So what differentiates Yo Grapes from Craig from Desmond And The Tutus?
YG: Well there’s only one person in the band which makes touring pretty lonely. But aside from that, Yo Grapes is entirely me making and playing the songs, song that are quite different to DaTTs.
BOS: As you’ve stated before Yo Grapes was a passion project what steered you into deciding to get more serious as an act, “being serious” being the fact that you decided to monetize Yo Grapes?
YG: Taking it more seriously just meant that I would make a conscious effort to play more shows and devote more time to the project than when I first started it.
BOS: What’s on your iTunes daily playlist ?
YG: Jonathan Richman, St Lucia, Tomas Barfod and John Wizards.
BOS: What’s your average studio session like?
YG: It’s relaxed and exciting when the ideas come.
BOS: What is the biggest influence to your writing style?
YG: Definitely going outdoors helps me think of new ideas, and melodies and stuff like that. For some reason, I dont know.
BOS: As an artist what would you define as the perfect music festival and why?
YG: Artists are treated well, runs on time, packed full of amped people.
BOS: What international festival would you love to play?
YG: Oooh, I really want to play Calvi on the Rocks one day, it’s on the beach n Corsica.
BOS: You give your music for free why is that?
YG: I think once it starts costing me more money I’ll charge for it. For now it doesn’t really cost too much, and the fact that I gave it away for free at the start meant that more people got to hear it which I’m happy about.
BOS: What are you looking forward to at the Cool Inc Tattoo Expo?
YG: Playing my set, and also getting a huge green grape tattooed on my back.
BOS: Should we expect new music during your set at Cool Inc Tatt Expo?
YG: I will introduce some new tracks from Grape Juice that I haven’t played live for a while.
