The Energizer Light Race

Bright lights and brighter smiles powered by Energizer at the 2014 Tour de Township Soweto Light Race

Runners, cyclists, fitness enthusiasts and party animals alike gathered in Soweto on Saturday the 10th of May to light up the night with the Energizer Light Race. The iconic township glowed with light and buzzed with energy as participants decked out in headlamps and smiles moved along the route, which highlighted some of SA’s most cultural and historic sites. The night was alive with endorphins and a feel-good vibe, with racers and spectators enjoying a line up of pre- and post-race entertainment under the stars.

The adventure began from 2pm onwards as racers and watchers gathered for music and some Soweto-style refreshments. After some shisanyama and a set by the Extraordinary Gentlemen to get everyone into a positive mood, racers lined up for an unforgettable Tour de Township. Over 4000 walkers, racers and cyclists raced the amazing routes. Between the 20km mountain bike race, 10km run and 5km walk, the routes included sites such as the Mandela Museum, the Orlando Towers, Orlando Stadium and famed Vilikazi street. The sounds of Pantsula dancers, Zulu drums, laughter and cheers all echoed through the Soweto streets as the racers crossed the finish line at Mofolo Park to enjoy Morgan Beatboxer and the Zinto dancers, DJ Milkshake and some well-earned food and drinks. Adding to the exhilaration, the prize-giving event handed out R25 000 worth of cash prizes to the winners of the trail run and mountain biking events in various categories.

Energizer Brand Manager Rashmi Vadivelu is thrilled with the turnout and response to the event. “The 2014 Light Race was a fantastic success. Close on the heels of the elections, we saw people coming together to celebrate South African history and culture, and showing a spirit of enjoyment and togetherness that really shone. Congratulations to everyone who took part!” Those who attended the race also agreed that they were excited and energized to experience the Soweto night life up close in such a unique way.
