So Ster-Kinekor at the Newtown Junction has become my home away from home, and this past Sunday I went to watch a film called ‘Home’, a whimsical film about an alien race known as the Boov on the run from their enemy, the Gorg. Led by Captain Smek they commence their friendly invasion of planet Earth, relocating the humans to other parts of the planet while the Boov inhabit their homes, and that puts a funny spin to the term ‘forced removals’ doesn’t it? Anyway, one of the Boov, Oh , is a more excited, free-thinking member of the species. He invites all the other Boovs to his apartment for a housewarming party. None of the Boovs show up, because none of them find him cute.

What follows is a story of an unlikely friendship that forms when an outcast alien meets a sassy little girl on a mission to find her mom. I think the story is well thought out and there are many hidden life “gems” noted within. The narrative is exciting, you’ll learn a thing or two about not judging others and about “being yourself” and learning from your mistakes. It is a little predictable but I think all adults feel that way about children’s movies. The animation is superb, the music endearing, the comedy is amusing, add some adventure and sci-fi in there and you have great mixture for a film that will leave you smiling from ear to ear.

In a nutshell, ‘Home’ is a lovely film, great read for both kids and adults. Rihanna and Jim Parsons do a wonderful job as the leads and so does Jennifer Lopez and Steve Martin as supporting characters. All in all it’s a good movie to see with the whole family. Also it’s refreshing to finally see a woman of colour be the lead character in a Dreamworks film. Be sure not to miss this film, and please do take your kids with, or your nephews and nieces if don’t have kids of your own yet, I am willing to bet that they’d enjoy seeing how two completely different characters from two different worlds seem to not fit in where they are from but somehow they both find friendship with each other. It’s a great story about trying to find your place and somewhere where you feel at home.
