Q&A with Jeremy Loops #Halloween2014

We had a few questions for Jeremy Loops ahead of his performance this weekend
read the Q&A below and let us know what you think via our social media channels

Bos: Jeremy can you tell some of our readers that dont know you, who Jeremy Loops is?

Jeremy Loops: I’m a musician from Cape Town. I would classify what I do as modern folk music as my songwriting style is steeped in folk music, but I collaborate with lots of interesting artists to give what I do a unique sound.

Bos: What made you pick up an instrument and why folk music?

JL: I was doing a degree in finance and property development at UCT and picking up the guitar was a way for me to escape the drudge of financial maths. I’ve always been more of a creative person and, as many know, numbers-based subjects don’t always provide creative stimulus. Music was my escape.

Bos: What is your favorite instrument and why?

JL: It’s hard to say, really. I love playing my harmonicas, but I think just on versatility and importance alone, there’s nothing quite like the guitar.

Bos: What do you think defines your sound?

JL: My music is very upbeat. It’s always been a hallmark of my songwriting and it’s a direct reaction to the real world challenges we all experience daily. I don’t think it would be a misrepresentation to call what I do as joyful and hopeful, and when you hear my songs, those are the emotions they evoke.

Bos: What do you expect from Halloween 2014?

JL: The party or the date? Haha. I love playing at Arcade Empire – I feel like we have home ground advantage there. As such, I expect the Pretoria Massive to be as loud and energetic as they always are. They’re really one of the best crowds in the world, PTA. They’re incredible.

Bos: Are we expecting new music from you at Halloween?

JL: I write non-stop. I have about 3 songs in production right now that I would love to introduce to the world, but it’s too soon. There are also older songs on the album I’ve only now figured out how I want to do live. So I can’t say for certain if there will be new music at Halloween, but new music is always brewing.

Bos: Have you ever attended a Halloween event?

JL: Several. One of my earliest memories as a performer is a Halloween show I played at a venue in Cape Town. We were dressed up as pirates, if I recall. Halcyon days! Haha.

Bos: Should we expect suprises during your set at Halloween?

JL: Again, I would never say ‘expect surprises’, but we work hard to make each set unique and memorable. What that means often times only takes shape the days before the set. The only expectation we have of ourselves is to put on the best show we possibly can and, luckily, that usually results in a surprise or two for all involved.
